The Department of Sports, Arts and Culture’s (DSAC’s) F1 Bid Steering Committee says it has received three bids from parties interested in hosting a Formula One race in South Africa.

“As a committee, we will now commence with a process to evaluate and confirm the compliance of the bids with the criteria set out in the request for expression of interest document issued for the process,” says steering committee chairperson Bakang Lethoko.

“As previously stated, we intend to evaluate the bids and conclude this phase of the process by the end of April.

“Thereafter, the committee will provide guidance to qualifying bidders on the process to unfold under Phase 2, wherein detailed proposals will be required.

“These proposals will have to comply with F1 requirements and meet our own national imperatives.”
Lethoko says the steering committee and government remain committed to making a bid to global motorsport’s governing body, the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), to host an F1 race in South Africa in 2027.

A DSAC spokesperson told Engineering News & Mining Weekly at the end of March that the bids had not been opened yet, which meant it was not yet possible to say which parties were interested in hosting an F1 race on local soil.

However, it is known that consortia in Gauteng and Cape Town have in the recent past expressed interest in hosting such a race.

The Kyalami race track, in Johannesburg, hosted South Africa’s last F1 race in 1993.
